| Personal History | Abby was born on Betazed but moved with her family to Vulcan when she was a year old when her father was offered a job at the Vulcan Science Academy. Her father wanted her to be more logical and less emotional, like a Vulcan. Her mother was overly emotional, even for a Betazoid, and he thought it would be good for her. That lasted for a decade, when they moved to Earth and Abby, who had always struggled with controlling her emotions, began to play with other human children. Her father gave up on her becoming more like him and accepted that his child was going to be who she was--although those years helped her be more studious and focused. She is a bit of a tomboy and often spent time outdoors, learning about nature. That turned to a love of history as she grew, and then a love of ancient civilizations—although she still has a fondness for the outdoors. Her father is a half-Vulcan/ half-Human professor of computer science. He taught at the Vulcan Science Academy and now teaches at Oxford on Earth. Her mother is Betazoid and was an ambassador for Betazed and is now a diplomat for the Federation. Abby spent her teen years in Utah where she participated in a lot of outdoor sports. Her best friend growing up was her brother and she spent a lot of time in the mountains with him. She has been trained in outdoor survival, search and rescue and tracking. She excelled at school and graduated at a young age. By the time she was 20 she had a Master’s Degree in history, archaeology and computers. She then went on to get a PhD in history and archaeology. For fun, she added Bachelor's degrees in literature and anthropology. Abby taught history at Oxford while she got her PhDs, but decided that she wanted to join Starfleet and explore. Because she already had several degrees, they let her take accelerated courses and test out of a number of her classes, allowing her to graduate in three years, most of it on learning about the other areas of Starfleet. It was great for her academic career, but not so much for her social life, which primarily consisted of time in libraries or in her room, reading books. |
